China take Iraq in their stride |
| |
|
For a change, China’s young star Guo Ailun did not end up with a game-high score. That credit, ironically, went on the losing side – Iraq’s Ali Ismael took the scoring honors for the game pouring in 26 points.
Incidentally, and unfortunately, Ismael was the only player in Ali Abdullah Hassan’s team who managed a double-digit score. In contrast, Guo scored 16 points – China’s individual highest – and saw four of his teammates too score more than 10 points.
The above sentences, in a nutshell, summarized China’s 84-49 win in Saturday’s Group F game. |

Iraq dish out entertaining fare, but Taipei win game |

|
For a team playing in an official FIBA Asia competition after a gap of 23 years, Iraq did extremely well to convert a 34-45 deficit at half-time into a 64-52 lead over the next 10 minutes in their Group A game against Chinese Taipei on Monday.
But as coach Fikrat Abdalahad put it later, “there wasn’t much gas left.” Chinese Taipei, obviously fielding a more experienced line-up capitalized on Iraqi’s mistakes and pulled their game up and eventually went on to win 86-77. |

Kazakhstan finish strong for their opening win |
| |
|
In a manner of speaking, both teams in the opening game of the 3rd FIBA Asia Stankovic Cup were out to gather exposure and gain in experience. Against that background it was no surprising that the action on the court was energetic and exchanges almost equal and the team that made the lesser mistakes ended up the eventual winners.
Kazakhstan, playing under a ‘promoted’ coach committed fewer errors and won the Group A game 76-65. |
