Iraq down Kazakhstan, gun for highest finish in more than 2 decades |

A dedicated Iraq overcame a demoralized Kazakhstan 71-67 on Wednesday to earn the opportunity to play off for the ninth place.
Iraq will take on the winners of the Malaysia-Syria game that follows for the ninth place in their first participation in the event after 1989. They had, however, finished seventh then, when the event was hosted in Manila.
Kazakhstan will play off for the 11th place against the team that loses that game. |

Iran scored the first 10 points of the second quarter, and then strengthened it further with mini-runs before culminating in a rousing 80-45 win over hosts Yemen in the last of the quarterfinals on Wednesday.
The win pits Iran against China in the semifinals on the morrow. Yemen have to be content in playing in the 5-8 Classification against Lebanon |

Yemen douse Syrian hopes, complete Quarterfinal line-up |

Hosts Yemen came up with a powerful performance and defeated fellow WABA team Syria 67-62 to put to rest the latter’s hopes of a late comeback in the competition.
Yemen finished with a 3-2 record in Group F, the same as Japan and Philippines. In the three-way tie-breaker of goal average differential that ensued, Philippines (1.08) finished ahead of Yemen (1.02) and Japan (0.90). |

Japan raced ahead early in the game, and then grimly hung on to stave a spirited challenge from hosts to win 68-64 as the curtains fell on the Preliminary Round of the competition on Friday night.
Japan led throughout the game – the scores were level only twice in the entire duration in the closing moments – but had to fight tooth and nail for the win. |

Yemen roll past India into second round |

Hosts Yemen scored the first eight points of their Thursday night’s Group D game against India and never had to worry to book their place in the second round with a 95-58 win.
India took all of two and half minutes to open their account, via an Arjun Singh drive in the lane, but that was how sporadic their offense worked. |

Sana'A stage set for the 21st FIBA Asia U18 Championship |

Defending champions Iran have been drawn alongside East Asia’s Chinese Taipei, Middle Asia’s Sri Lanka and SEABA team Malaysia in Group A for the Preliminary Round of the 21st FIBA Asia Championship to be held here from Sept 22-Oct 2.
The draw ceremony was held at the host city on Wednesday.
FIBA Asia Deputy Secretary General Hagop Khajirian and Yemen Basketball Federation president Al Khader Al Azani supervised the draw proceedings in the presence of Director General of the Sports and Youth Affairs in the Government of Yemen. |
