LONDON, Great Britain (2012 London Olympics): China, the lone FIBA Asia representative in the women’s basketball competition at the 2012 London Olympics will have Croatia, Czech Republic and Turkey for company – apart from FIBA Africa champions Angola and defending Olympic gold medalists – in Group B following the conclusion of the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament for Women on Sunday.
The five qualified teams from the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament for Women were drawn into the two groups of six, previously determined at the Olympic Basketball Draw in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on 30 April.
The Groupings
Group A: Angola, China, Croatia, Czech Republic, Turkey, USA.
Group B: Australia, Great Britain, Brazil, Canada, France, Russia.
The 12 qualified teams are divided into two pools of six and will play the five other teams in their respective groups during the Preliminary Round. The top four classified teams from each group will then move on to the Quarter-Finals of a standard knock-out tournament.
The schedule of games for the Olympic women’s basketball competition has also been finalized.
China will begin their campaign against 2010 FIBA World Championship for Women runners-up Czech Republic on July 28, the opening day of the basketball competition at the 2012 London Olympics
