IRI - Iran call up 20 players for preliminary training

TEHRAN, Iran (4th FIBA Asia Cup / IRIBF): The Iranian Basketball Federation (IRIBF) has called up 20 players for preliminary training as the twice former FIBA Asia champions prepare for the 4th FIBA Asia Cup in Tokyo from Sept 14-22.

The players will begin training on Tuesday soon after the return of Head Coach Memi Becirovic, who is currently accompanying the Iran U18 NT preparing in Europe for the 22nd FIBA Asia U18 Championship to be played at Ulaanbaatar (Mongolia) from Aug 17-26 as its technical advisor.

The camp will run for two weeks before some pruning is done. Slobodan Mitev and Iranian Safa Ali Kamalian will work as Becirovic’s assistants.

The 4th FIBA Asia Cup (earlier known as FIBA Asia Stankovic Cup) is the qualifying event for the 27th FIBA Asia Championship in 2013, which in turn will be the qualifying event for 2014 FIBA World Cup.

The winners of the 4th FIBA Asia Cup will automatically qualify for the 27th FIBA Asia Championship in 2013. The top four teams at the 4th FIBA Asia Cup will earn additional berths for their respective FIBA Asia sub zones.

Iran have been grouped with Chinese Taipei, former champions Qatar, hosts Japan and a team that will represent FIBA Asia sub zone SABA in Group B for the Prelim Round of the competition at 4th FIBA Asia Cup.

Hamed Haddadi, Arsalan Kazemi, Samad Bahrami, Mehdi Kamrani, Hamed Afagh, Farid Aslani, Reza Lotfi, Saeed Davarpanah, Mehrad Atashi, Aren Davoudi, Oshin Sahakian, Farhad Saboori, Jaber Rouzbehani, Javad Davari, Amirhosein Tatari, Mohammadreza Khabazan, Ruzbeh Arghavan, Mohammad Jamshidi, Asghar Kardoust, Mohammad Hassanzadeh.
