LONDON, United Kingdom (2012 London Olympics): A fantastic 24-6 third quarter run studded their campaign as reigning FIBA Asia Championship for Women Chinese women steamrolled their FIBA Africa counterparts Angola 76-52 (Box scores) for their third win, in as many games, in the Group A Prelim Round of the 2012 London Olympics women’s basketball competition on Wednesday.
China who defeated 2010 FIBA World Championship for Women silver medalists Czech Republic 66-57 (Game report) and then routed Croatia 83-58 (Game report), are now assured of a place in the quarterfinals with the results of their remaining two games in Group A only helping them for a higher seeding in the play-offs.
China next play 2011 Eurobasket for Women silver medalists Turkey on Friday.
For the first game in the 2012 London Olympics, all Chinese players went on court – each of them for at least four minutes – and all of them scored.
Ma Zengyu, who accounted for 7 points in China’s third period barrage, went on to share the scoring honors for her team and the game with 15 points – the Liaoning Hengye forward also pulling down 6 rebounds. Click here for post-game comments.
Nan Chen, who scored four points in China’s opening run in the second half, also had 15 points – 8 of them in the first period to keep things moving for her team.
Veteran Miao Lijie dished out 5 assists along with her 6 points and youngster Gao Song (pic above) hauled down a team-high 9 rebounds with her 8 points.
