PHI/INA - FAU18: Philippines prove more than a handful for SEABA rivals Indonesia

ULAANBAATAR, Mongolia (22nd FIBA Asia U18 Championship): SEABA U18 champions Philippines repeated their triumph at the subzonal competition earlier this year beating SEABA archrivals Indonesia 88-62 in a Group F Second Round game on Monday.

Philippines, who had beaten Indonesia 81-57 in the SEABA quaifeirs in Singapore in June this year simply continued from where they left off there and carved out the clinical victory.

Mario Bonleon (pic above) led the Philippines charge scoring 7 of his game’s 15 points in the first quarter to put the team in control.

Marlon Pingoy then took over and went on to lead the Filipino scoring with 16 points as Rey Nambatac missed a double-double by one rebound scoring 11 points.

Indonesia matched pace with their rivals for the first few moments of the game. But just till Philippines found their rhythm in the latter part of the first quarter closing the period with a 12-6 run. There was no trouble for the Philippines after that.

“It was important for us to keep the boys focused especially after last night’s defeat,” said Philippines coach Olsen Racela recalling Sunday’s 73-92 defeat the team suffered against Iran in Group D Prelim Round.

“We were very familiar with their (Indonesia) style and had beaten them very recently. Both helped us take control,” he said.

“Hopefully the way we have recovered will help us tomorrow,” Racela said looking ahead at Tuesday’s clash against Chinese Taipei.

“I think the result of that game (against Taipei) will virtually decide the No 2 team in our group. We are surely targeting that spot so that we get a good draw in the quarterfinals,” the coach added.

Indonesia’s task of making the last eight only got that much tougher with the team now needing to win one of the two remaining games – against Iran on Tuesday and Saudi Arabia the following day – to remain in the race.

Jan Pinagan’s dozen points paced Indonesia.
