DOHA (21st FIBA Asia Champions Cup): Women’s basketball in the Gulf sub zone region received a boost with the Qatari women’s National Team playing two international friendly games against the invited Philippines women’s National Team.
The first of the games was played at the Al Gharrafa Stadium to kick-start the final day’s proceedings of the 21st FIBA Asia Champions Cup.
The second game will be played at 5 pm at the Aspire Zone Stadium.
For the record, Philippines won 55-28, but the mood in the hosts’ camp was one of euphoria and excitement.
“This is the first time that our women’s National Team is playing against a team across the zones,” said Sheikh Saud bin Ali Al-Thani, FIBA Asia president and also the president of the Qatar Basketball Federation.
“This is a part of FIBA Asia’s efforts to get more people involved in the sport,” he added.
“We need more women’s teams from this region and West Asia in order to increase the depth of competition in women’s competitions in FIBA Asia,” Sheikh Saud said.
