JPN – Isshiki: I hope this win marks the turnaround in Japanese basketball
MEDAN, Indonesia (FIBA Asia U18 Championship for Women): Terming Japan as the eternal underachievers of Asian basketball might just not be wrong.
The hoopsters from the Land of Rising Sun have always been a part of the ‘top teams’ group, but have struggled to translate that status into title triumphs.
Take this for example, Japanese women have won the Senior Asian title just once – way back in 1970 and their men became champions of Asia even earlier – in 1965.
The Japanese U18 Men raised the hopes when they won the title at the 11th ABC Championship for Junior Men (as it was called then) at Nagoya in 1990, but after that there has no title triumph for Japan in any category and any age-group in official Asian competitions.
