IRI – This win is much more gratifying than last year’s: Mehran

KUWAIT (FIBA Asia Champions Cup): Head Coach Mehran Shahintab wore a look of immense pleasure and relief as he sat down at the dinner table after Saba Battery retained the FIBA Asia Champions Cup, beating Qatari powerhouse Al Rayyan 82-75 in the final of the 19th edition of the tournament on Monday.

The 42-year-old, through his club, has been one of the moving forces for Iran itself to becoming a major basketball nation. A seven-year stint with the club has not diminished Mehran’s appetite for success. Talking to the head coach of Asia’s champion club was, therefore, much more than the routine post-match interviews.
“This year’s win gives me and my club much more satisfaction than last year’s win,” Mehran opened his conversation with S Mageshwaran of FIBA Asia.

“For one, we came into this tournament to defend our title. Being the defending champions always has its own pressure. Every single move of ours – on the court or off it – is watched very carefully. So, I think we did rather well to handle those pressures and go on to win the tournament,” he added.

“Also there were a lot of disappointing incidents that happened in the last year’s tournament. Not every body went back convinced. That kind of left a vacuum in my mind. I think with this win, we have proved fair and square that Saba Battery is truly the champion club of Asia,” he beamed.

It was not that all was hunky-dory with Saba’s campaign. The Iranian outfit was in for a shock in its very second outfit, losing in overtime to unfancied Emirates club Al Wasl. The defeat set a lot of doubts in people’s minds about Saba’s temperament to handle pressure.

“We knew it,” said Mehran. “But I also knew the only way to prove ourselves was by winning the tournament. Nothing less would have helped. That defeat added to all those pressures I mentioned earlier.”

“That defeat actually came as a wake up call,” Mehran said. “That kind of spurred us to improve with every game,” he added.

Saba beat top guns Al Riyadi Beirut in the semifinals and Al Rayyan in the final, in back-to-back matches, which Mehran termed as “any team which wants to be called the champion has to do that.”

“What I’m really happy about is the way my team handled the pressure of playing such well organized basketball teams,” he added.

“Beating Riyadi and Rayyan in two days is a great achievement. Because both of them are very good basketball teams. I have a lot of respect for their coaches (Fuad Abou Chakra of Riyadi and Brian Lester of Rayyan). Beating them, therefore, is immensely satisfying. I think today is a red letter day in my coaching career,” he added.

Mehran attributed the success of his team to his coaching staff. “My coaches did an excellent job of scouting. They broke down five hours of video (of Rayyan games) last night and brought it down to 10 minutes for the team to understand what we need to do,” he explained.

“I think their contribution is one of the key factors why we won such important matches back to back,” he added.

Mehran also praised Dajuan Tate, the MVP of the final, “for producing such a fantastic stuff in the final.”

“Initially it was difficult to communicate with each other. I just didn’t know what kind of a player he was. During one of the games, we had a long chat in the locker room. That was revealing,” Mehran said.

“After that, I started to utilize him better. What he did in the final was amazing. It was for all to see,” Mehran concluded before rushing to greet the fans of club.

IRI – What matters more is that the team won: Tate

KUWAIT (FIBA Asia Champions Cup): Seldom does one get to witness an individual player influence the result of a basketball game as American Dajuan Tate did for Saba Battery in the final of the 19th FIBA Asia Champions Cup on Monday.

The 26-year-old shot a staggering 14 points in less than four minutes, his impeccable shooting prowess on display in all glory, as Saba surged ahead from a par score to victory by what looked like a convincing margin.

“Look, I hadn’t been having a great tournament. So I thought it was my responsibility to deliver now,” Tate told S Mageshwaran of FIBA Asia in a chat after the game.
“There was no better moment than this to deliver. To influence the game, in the final five minutes of a championship game is a dream every professional lives for,” he added.

“But what gives me more happiness tonight is that whatever I did contributed to the team winning a championship game.”

It was a ‘May Day’ call from his agent that brought Tate to the Champions Cup.

“My agent called me at 10 am and said ‘You have a flight at 1. You are playing a tournament in Kuwait.’ I was like ‘Hey Hang on.’ That’s why this kind of a performance becomes even more valuable to me,” Tate said.

Tate came into the tournament with a huge reputation to protect. He was the No. 1 ‘Position 2’ guard in the draft for the Chinese league last summer – picked by Jinlin Northeast Tigers – from a field of close to 70 players. As if to justify that, he scored a stupendous 68 points as he led his team to beat Yunnan Honghe Running Bulls in the Chinese league. He went on to finish the CBA fourth on the league’s scoring leader board with an average of 26.3 points per game. But the way he started this tournament was far from that reputation.

Having missed the opener, against Al Qadsia, Tate was almost inconspicuous in the next game – the defeat against Al Wasl. A game-high 42 points against the unfancied ONGC followed. And Tate was yet to prove his ‘big name.’

“I knew there were a lot of eyes who were giving ‘hey what’s this guy up to’ kind of look. But I must say that my teammates and my coach never gave up on me. I had a long chat with my coach during one of the games and after that we got it going,” Tate said.

“You know, I’m the sort of a player who thinks of the team first. I’m an offensive player and I think I’m blessed with the ability to put the ball into the basket,” he said.

“But what matters to me more than scoring is helping another teammate score. Ultimately, it doesn’t matter who scores. What matters is whether the scoring helped the team win. If it’s me who score I’m happier,” he said.

Talking more about his MVP performance in the final, Tate said “I think the fact I didn’t have too many good games earlier came as a blessing in disguise.”

“I think their scouts completely missed me. They were concentrating more on Gabe (Enyinn Mounike, Hamed (Ehadadi) and Samad (Nikkah). It was not deliberate on my part that I didn’t do well in the earlier games. But I think that helped,” he said with twinkle in his eyes.

“Playing in this part of the world has been fun. I find basketball a lot better organized than a lot of other places. This place has a future,” he dwelled.

“I’d love to come back and play,” he concluded.

IRI / QAT – Tate powers Saba to title

KUWAIT (FIBA Asia Champions Cup): Dajuan Tate unleashed the Most Valuable Performance of the championship, as Saba Battery pulled away from an even position to beat Al Rayyan 82-75 in the final of the 19th FIBA Asia Champions Cup on Monday.

With the score tantalizingly poised at 68-all and with less than four minutes in the even-keeled encounter, Tate took charge of the proceedings. A three-pointer followed by two under-the-basket conversions gave his side the cushion of relief.

And when Hamed Ehadadi blocked rival center Yasseen Musa, Tate seized the opportunity again with a center-court three-pointer following it up with a sizzling drive through.
The only instance Tate did not score from the field during this spree was when he earned a shooting-action foul. Success with both his throws saw Tate, and in turn Saba, record a 14-2 run in the last 3:49. A run that took the wind off Rayyan’s sails.

“What can we do against such an inspired run!” wondered Rayyan coach Brian Lester. “Such things are made of championship material,” lauded Saba coach Mehran Shahintab.

As for Tate himself, he put in rather succinctly: “That’s what I came here for.”

That spree took Tate who had a none-too-impressive earlier presence in the game to a game-high 30 points. “Look, I hadn’t been having a great tournament. So I thought it was my responsibility to deliver now,” Tate said.

“There was no better moment than this to deliver. To influence the game, in the final five minutes of a championship game is a dream every professional lives for,” he said.

Exchanges had been till then equal in the encounter – in quality as well as quantity. Neither enjoyed any major edge and even those minor advantages earned were nullified before growing to dangerous proportions.

Tate, incidentally, opened the scoring for the game with an elegant drive-in and Saba never looked back to go into the first break at 16-15.

Rayyan who managed to remain close came with a 24-13 surge in the second as Eric Chatfield (with 15 points and five rebounds) and Yasseen Musa began to find their rhythm. Samad Nikkah who had done commendably in the first quarter for Saba, saw his attempts bounce back as Enyinn Mounike fought a lone battle to bridge the gap on Rayyan.

Another see-saw ensued and this time Saba were back in the saddle. Samad regained his touch and Mounike continued to fire. As Hamed Ehadadi came into his own, especially in the defense, Saba sprang a 32-14 surprise on Rayyan in the third quarter.
But with Chatfield finding support from his bench players, Rayyan were always in the race. And when Chatfield sunk a 3-pointer to tie the scores at 68-all, the stage seemed set for vintage stuff.

Vintage stuff it indeed was, except that it flowed in one direction; in a direction guided by one man; and in the direction which took Saba to the title.

“This is a great win for us. What more can I say. I think this is our gift to Iranian basketball,” Shahintab said.

“I think we made a couple of crucial mistakes earlier in the game. But Tate sealed the issue for us,” he added.

سابا باتري يحتفظ باللقب ويعزز تفوق ايران الآسيوي


عززت ايران تفوقها على صعيد كرة السلة الآسيوية عشية مشاركة منتخبها في أولمبياد بكين 2008، وذلك بعدما إحتفظ فريق سابا باتري بلقب بطولة الأندية في نسختها التاسعة عشرة التي استضافها نادي القادسية الكويتي في قاعة فجحان هلال المطيري منذ الثامن من ايار/ مايو الجاري، وهي المرة الثانية التي تستضيف فيها الكويت هذا الحدث بعد عام 2006 حين فاز فاست لينك الاردني (زين حالياً) بالكأس.
ونجح سابا في تجاوز كل العقبات التي اعترضته في هذه البطولة وتغلب في النهائي على حامل اللقب عامي 2002 و2005 الريان القطري (82ـ75). الأرباع (16ـ15، 13ـ24، 32ـ14، 21ـ22)، ليبقي بذلك الكأس في منطقة غرب آسيا التي سيكون من حقها شأنها شأن منطقة الخليج في أن يتمثلا بفريقين في النسخة العشرين المؤهلة الى بطولة العالم للأندية بعدما أعاد الاتحاد الدولي الـFiba احياء هذه المسابقة.
وجاءت المباراة قمة حقيقية وشهدت الكثير من الشد العصبي حيث واكب الطرفين جمهور كبير غالبيته من الايرانيين.
ويدين سابا بالفوز الى اللاعب الأميركي دوجوان تات على الرغم من أنه لم يكن موفقاً ما استدعى استبداله في بداية المباراة، لكن عودته في الشوط الثاني جاءت في محلها إذ أن الشوط الأول انتهى قطرياً (39ـ29) بقيادة صانع الألعاب الأميركي المتألق ايريك تشاتفيلد (29 نقطة بينها 6 ثلاثيات).
الا أن تات ظهر في الوقت المناسب حيث ساعد فريقه بالتعاون مع النيجيري غايب مونيكيه (26 نقطة) ولاعب الارتكاز حامد أهدادي (18 نقطة و15 متابعة على تسجيل 32 نقطة في الربع الثالث في مقابل 14 للريان فإنتزع سابا التقدم (61ـ 53).
ومع انتصاف الربع الأخير أدرك تشاتفيلد التعادل (68ـ68) فعاد تات مجدداً ليحسم المهمة عبر تسجيله عشر نقاط متتالية وتألقه دفاعاً وهجوماً رافعاً رصيده الى (30 نقطة و9 متابعات.
وقال المدرب الايراني مهران شاهينتاب إن اللاعب تات يتمتع بمستوى أكبر بعد وانما التحق متأخراً ولم يتأقلم بعد مع رفاقه، أما الاسترالي بريان ليستر مدرب الريان فقال " عججزنا عن ايقافهم واستحقوا الفوز، قدمنا مباراة دفاعية سيئة".
وفي نهاية المباراة سلم كل من الشيخ سعود بن علي آل ثاني رئيس الاتحادين الآسيوي والقطري، والشيخ حمد السالم الصباح رئيس الاتحاد الكويتي، والشيخ طلال الفهد نائب رئيس الاتحادين الدولي والآسيوي الميداليات الذهبية وكأس المركز الأول الى الفريق الفائز بينما سلم الأمين العام المساعد في الاتحاد الىسيوي هاغوب خاتشريان الميداليات الفضية وكأس المركز الثاني، في حين تسلم لاعبو نادي الوصل الميداليات البرونزية وكأس المركز الثاني من نائب رئيس الاتحاد الكويتي خليل ابراهيم والأمين العام عبد الله الكندري.

توج فريق الوصل الاماراتي مشواره المميز في أول مشاركة له في البطولة بإحراز المركز الثالث بعد تغلبه على النادي الرياضي (87ـ82). الأرباع (20ـ29، 21ـ15، 24ـ 19، 22ـ19) لينضم بطل لبنان الى سلسلة ضحايا التألق الاماراتي. الذي شهدته البطولة على مدار البطولة، بعدما سبق لتلامذة المدرب عبد الحميد ابراهيم أن هزموا سابا باتري الايراني واطاحوا بزين الاردني من الدور ربع النهائي.
وأخفق الرياضي في المقابل في الحفاظ على المكانة الآسيوية التي بلغها في مشاركته الأولى عام 98، ففشل بإحراز المركز الثالث للمرة الثانية.

اللقب بقي في غرب آسيا للمرة الثالثة على التوالي والسابعة من أصل 19 في مقابل ثلاث مرات للخليج حيث انحصر اللقب بين المنطقتين في السنوات العشرة الأخيرة مع توقف الأندية الشرق آسيوية عن المشاركة اذ سبق أن أحرزت اللقب خمس مرات بينما نجحت أربع أندية فيليبينية في رفع الكأس وفي ما يلي اسماء الأندية:

KUWAIT (FIBA Asia Champions Cup): Al Wasl on Monday became the first team from United Arab Emirates to finish on the podium at the FIBA Asia Champions Cup. The Emirians achieved the feat defeating a deflated Al Riyadi Beirut 87-82 in the play-off for the third place at the 19th edition of the tournament on Monday.

Riyadi, who were returning to the Champions Cup after a decade, thus finished a step lower that they had at Kuala Lumpur in 1998.

Riyadi seemed to have shrugged the effects of the semifinal defeat in the initial moments. Joseph Vogel and Fadi El Khatib coordinated well and Riyadi were up 29-20 at the end of the first quarter.
ates team to finish on podiumBut Wasl’s Ivorian import Herve Lamizana, who had struggled to get past Vogel initially, began to find his feet and brought about a change in his side’s fortunes. Wasl, riding on Lamizana’s MVP effort – which was well supported by by Ibraheem Ahmad and Rashed Al-Zabi – outscored their opponents 21-15, 24-19, 22-19 in the next three quarters.

Lamizana top scored the game with 30 points, and nine rebounds.

“This is a glorious moment for Emirates basketball,” said an excited Wasl coach Abdul Hameed Ibrahim.

“We came here as the underdogs, but have finished much higher than everybody expected,” he said.

“We lost just one match in this tournament. Considering the field here that’s quite an achievement for us,” Ibrahim said.

“We beat three of the big names in the tournament. Losing to one of them (Al Rayyan of Qatar in the semifinals) was a learning experience for the boys. So overall we have gained a lot from the tournament,” he added.

“It takes a lot of character to take to the court after last night,” Riyadi coach Fuad Abu Chakra said.

“In that background, I think my team did rather well,” he added.

الريان يوقف مغامرة الوصل ويبلغ النهائي

وضع الريان القطري حداً لمغامرة الوصل الاماراتي الذي وصف بالحصان الأسود في بطولة الأندية الأسيوية الـ19 في كرة السلة والتي يستضيفها نادي القادسية الكويتي، حيث هزمه بفارق كبير (81ـ57). الأرباع (18ـ16، 29ـ9، 19ـ9، 13ـ23) بعد مباراة من طرف واحد وتأهل للقاء حامل اللقب سابا باتري في النهائي بعد فوز الأخير على الرياضي اللبناني (70ـ68).
وقال المدير الفني لفريق الريان الأسترالي بريان ليستر " لا يوجد في نصف النهائي مباراة سهلة وفوزنا باللقاء جاء لأننا نستحق ذلك والمباراة النهائية ستكون قوية جداً ونأمل أن نحر اللقب".


وقد برز من الفريق الفائز قائده ياسين اسماعيل (16 نقطة و9 متابعات) وهو نفس الرصيد الذي سجله الأميركي دارلون جونسون واضاف ايريك تشاتفيلد (9 نقاط و7 متابعات و6 تمريرات) كما تألق علي سعد (10 نقاط و8 متبعات) ومن الخاسر سجل أيوب البلوشي (21 نقطة).

QAT / UAE – Rayyan rout Wasl, enter final

KUWAIT (FIBA Asia Champions Cup): Two-time former champions Al Rayyan made their fifth final in eight years, dashing the hopes of UAE’s Al Wasl 81-57 in the second semifinal of the 19th FIBA Asia Champions Cup on Sunday.

The lop-sided nature of the scoreline more or less reflected the dominance exercised by Al Rayyan as the Qatar side utilized their height advantage to decimate their rivals.

Wasl suffered a blow even before the game began, with their American import – and spearhead of their all-win run in the tournament thus far – Courtney Fields forced to sit on the bench due to an injury on the back of his left knee – suffered during Wasl’s quarterfinal win against Zain.
Without the prolific Fields in the line-up, Wasl found the going touch especially against the well-oiled machine Australian coach Brian Lester had put together on Rayyan’s behalf.

Yasseen Musa, a member of all the Rayyan teams that made the final was the leader of the Qatari campaign. The center led his team’s scoring with 16 points, and stood tall under the basket – collecting nine rebounds, four of them in defense. Rayyan, unlike Wasl, had no trouble with their imports. Eric Chatfield was used very sparingly, rightly so considering the untesting nature of the contest, and Dalron Johnson was his usual self returning 15 points.

As against the well focused attack of Rayyan, Wasl looked in disarray. Fields’ absence left them at a huge disadvantage in height and the other import Herve Lamizana was far from being consistent. As a result, Ayoub Albaloushi’s game-high 21 points brought some semblance of respectability to Wasl’s scoreline.

Wasl ‘won’ the final quarter, when Lester tried his bench, 23-13, but had suffered irrecoverable losses in the first three – 16-18, 9-29, 13-23.

“We knew the pressure was on us,” Lester said.

“They were coming with five wins behind them and in a tournament like this, that’s no small feat. We had to guard against their speed. Of course, they missed Fields a lot,” he added.

“We are obviously happy that we made the final, but I think this win has boosted our confidence for the final,” Lester said.

“Obviously, it’s a great achievement for Qatari basketball,” beamed Yasseen Musa.

“We knew we were on the verge of creating history by becoming the only team to play five finals in eight years. That really motivated us,” he added.

“They are not as bad a team as the scoreline might suggest,” Musa said adding, “Fields not being there helped us.”

“But as I said, we were under pressure having failed to make the finals in the last two years. That’s what spurred us. I hope we can repeat this performance in the final.”

سابا الايراني يدافع عن لقبه بعد فوزه على الرياضي اللبناني


سيدافع سابا باتري الايراني عن لقبه مرة ثانية على التوالي في بطولة الأندية الآسيوية، بعدما بلغ نهائي النسخة التاسعة عشرة حين نجح برد إعتباره أمام الرياضي اللبناني بطل أندية غرب آسيا فهزمه (70ـ68). الأرباع (22ـ25، 20ـ14، 9ـ 15، 19ـ14) في نصف النهائي ليثأر بالتالي لخسارته أمامه (82ـ83) في نهائي بطولة أندية غرب اسيا في مدينة ماهشهر الايرانية قبل شهرين.
نهائي البطولة التي يستضيفها نادي القادسية الكويتي، سيشهد عند التاسعة مساء الاثنين مواجهة خليجية ـ غــرب آسيوية للمرة الرابعة في تاريخها، حيث يلتقي سابا مع الريان القطري الفائز على الوصل الاماراتي (81ـ57) في المباراة نصف النهائية الثانية. كما يلتقي الوصل والرياضي لتحديد المركزين الثالث والرابع.
وتجددت ذكريات اليمة للرياضي مع هذه البطولة في الدور نصف النهائي بالذات فلم يتمكن بطل لبنان وغرب آسيا من التخلص من عقدة دامت عشر سنوات عندما خسر أمام هانوي الصيني في النسخة التاسعة في ماليزيا، لكن الحلم الآسيوي تبدد في أول مرة يشارك فيها "الأصفر" في البطولة الرسمية الأهم على صعيد الأندية في المنطقة منذ العام 98 .
وخاض الرياضي الدور نصف النهائي للمرة الثانية في مشاركته الثانية في البطولة، وكانت إحدى نقاط المباراة البارزة هي الحالة التي سيكون عليها لاعب ارتكازه جوزف فوغل بمواجهة العملاق الايراني حامد أهداي. ولعل الدقيقة الأولى للمباراة كانت كفيلة بانقشاع الرؤية عن هذا الواقع لأن فوغل صد كرة لأهدادي تحت السلة وأعاق تحركاته بالتكافل والتضامن مع اسماعيل أحمد.
وانطلق الفريقان من خطة الدفاع رجل لرجل وتحكمت الأعصاب بالمجريات خصوصاً أن الفريق اللبناني بدا وكأنه يلعب على أرضه نتيجة رجحان كفته من الناحية الجماهيرية، وكانت الأمور تسير على ما يرام الى أن حصل ما لم يكن بالحسبان وهو اصابة قائد فريق الرياضي المصري اسماعيل أحمد بعد خمس دقائق على البداية بعد أن سجل 8 نقاط ما اضطره الى مغادرة الملعب في مطلع الربع الثاني.
ومع ذلك فقد أكمل الفريق اللبناني بالزخم نفسه بفضل التعاون بين فوغل ورفاقه مع العلم أن اصابة "سمعة" سهَّلت مهمة الايرانيين في مراقبة فادي الخطيب، لكن عمر الترك منح التقدم لفريقه بسلة على الـ"بازر" في نهاية الربع الأول (25ـ22) مع العلم أن سابا كان متقدماً (22ـ17).
ولم يتمكن اسماعيل من التحامل على اصابته أكثر فخرج في الدقيقة الثانية للربع الثاني وأعطى مكانه لحسين توبة. وكان الحل الوحيد بالنسبة لمدرب الرياضي فؤاد ابو شقرا هو تحويل دفاعه الى (المنطقة 2ـ3) الـ"زون"، وهو ما أزعج لاعبي حامل اللقب الذين لم يتمكنوا من اضافة أي ثلاثية الى الرميات الأربعة التي تمكنوا منها في الربع الأول، لكن سابا بقي متقدماً في نهاية الشوط الأول (42ـ38).
واجريت الاسعافات اللازمة لإسماعيل أحمد الذي بدا جاهزاً للمشاركة في الربع الثالث وخلال سبع دقائق انتزع الرياضي التقدم (52ـ44) بينما لم يسجل سابا سوى سلة واحدة، وبدا الرياضي متجهاً نحو توسيع الفارق خصوصاً مع عودة قائده المصري لكن "الآية انقلبت" وتحرك في المقابل سماد نيكخا بهرامي مسجلاً ثلاثية وسلتين لأهدادي مقابل سلة واحدة للرياضي في ثلاث دقائق فإنتهى الربع الثالث (54ـ51).
ويمكن القول أن حامد اسلامية كان بطل الربع الأخير لأنه كسر دفاع المنطقة برميتين ثلاثيتين وساعد فريقه على التقدم (64 ـ 56) وقبل نصف دقيقة توقفت النتيجة عند (68ـ64)، فحصل بهرامي على خطأ ليسجل رمية ويطيح بالثانية وفي الهجمة المرتدة اخفق الرياضي في التسجيل ليضطر الخطيب لارتكاب خطأ على أهدادي والأخير لم يسجل الرميتين، فقاد رامي عقيقي هجمة مرتدة وسجل ثلاثية وحصل معها على خطأ مقلصاً الفارق الى سلة (69ـ67) قبل 5 ثوان.
لكنه أضاع الرمية الحرة الاضافية فإلتقط علي فخر الدين المتابعة الهجومية واتخذ خياراً فردياً هو التسجيل بمواجهة ثلاثة لاعبين من سابا مع العلم أن الخيار الأسهل كان تمرير الكرة الى الخطيب الذي أوقف الساعة قبل 48 عشراً من الثانية مفسحاً في المجال أمام بهرامي لتسديد رميتين. وفي هذه الأثناء انهمرت العبوات الفارغة من الجمهور اللبناني على الملعب فتوجه مدير نادي سابا نصر الله معيني الى الجمهور بحركات غير رياضية ليعاقبه حكم المباراة بإحتساب "تيكنيكال فاول" عليه.
وقد سجل بهرامي رمية ثم نفذ الخطيب الخطأ التقني (70ـ68)، وحاول الرياضي تسجيل رمية ثلاثية في الدقيقة الأخيرة الا أن تسديدة عمر الترك ضلت الطريق. ففاز سابا. وكان النيجيري غايب مونيكيه (17 نقطة) أفضل مسجل لدى الفائز واضاف حامد أهدادي (14 نقطة و16 متابعة) فيما كان فادي الخطيب أفضل مسجل في المباراة بـ20 نقطة و11 متابعة واضاف جو فوغل (17 نقطة و10 متابعات).
